Reports: Devin Booker expected to be back vs Denver Nuggets for Christmas Day matchup
Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker is expected to return for the team's Christmas Day game against the Denver Nuggets. Booker has been out for the last three games due to a groin injury. Here's what ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported about Booker's availability on Sunday:
"ESPN Sources: Suns star Devin Booker (groin) is expected to return vs. the Nuggets on Sunday (10:30 PM ET on ABC/ESPN). Booker, averaging a career-high 28 points, has missed three consecutive games. Phoenix-Denver caps a five-game Christmas Day lineup."
Booker rediscovered his rhythm after enduring a rough patch before getting injured again. In his last appearance, he scored 58 points in the Phoenix Suns' 118-114 win over the New Orleans Pelicans. Booker's absence proved costly for Phoenix as they lost two of their last three games during that stretch.
His presence has become crucial for the team against top contenders, as the Suns don't have another legitimate scoring threat like him. Chris Paul has been passive all year, while Deandre Ayton's role has changed offensively in every game.
The Denver Nuggets have won six of their last seven games. Their current form makes Devin Booker's return even more vital for the Phoenix Suns, who aim to win consistently after losing seven of their last ten games.
Devin Booker remains key to Phoenix Suns' success
Devin Booker is in the middle of a career-high season, averaging 28.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game, shooting on 48/37/85 splits. The Phoenix Suns were the best team in the league for a brief stretch, but they haven't been able to sustain that.
The Suns have struggled on both ends of the floor during their 3-7 run. They rank 17th offensively and 28th on defense in that stretch. Phoenix hasn't been as inconsistent as they are now since their rejuvenation as a top contender in 2021.
Devin Booker has been their top scorer in those two seasons, but he is now their best player, ahead of CP3 in the pecking order. This is where he will have to show up and carry his team during their off nights, making him key to their success if they stick with their current core in the long run.
Booker is a bonafide superstar in the league and has to emerge as a reliable presence, especially when the team struggles. The Suns' current situation makes it ideal for him to develop into that role.
