Rudy Gay traded to Toronto in a three team deal

The Grizzlies finally have decided to call it time on Rudy Gay‘s time in Memphis. The dynamic all-star was sent packing to the Toronto Raptors in a three team trade that involved the Detroit Pistons as well. The rumours of Gay’s possible departure from the Grizzlies has been widely rumoured in recent times; however, with their recent trade in which they sent three squad player along with a draft pick to the Cavaliers for John Leuer, it looked they might persist with the 7th year forward for some  time.

It seems that the Grizzlies weren’t too impressed with the small forward who is shooting a dismal 40.8% from the floor while averaging 17.2 point a game. With still  two years and more than $37 million on the books for Gay, the Grizzlies decided it was time to say adieu. Jose Calderon and Ed Davis were sent to the Grizzlies from Toronto, who immediately traded the veteran Spanish guard to the Detroit Pistons exchange for Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye.

Detroit is in a dire need of a ball handler and with Calderon’s contract up at the end of the season, it gives the Pistons greater cap flexibility. The deal seems to benefit the Grizzlies as well, who would add the veteran leadership to their roster while also taking away Gay’s inefficient 16.4 shot attempts per game.

What does it do for the Raptors? Other than adding another inefficient player besides Bargnani, it’s anybody’s guess. Gay has the look of all-star who isn’t playing anywhere near his previous year and even then wasn’t worthy of a max.  But besides his scoring prowess, Gay has little to offer in terms of defence or rebounding and only time will tell how this turns out for Toronto.
