Golden State Warriors Rumors: NBA exec says defending champs want to bring back Kevin Durant

The Golden State Warriors won two championships and went to three NBA Finals with Kevin Durant from 2017 to 2019. The Warriors proved that they could win the title without Durant, doing so last season. However, the latest rumors suggest that the defending champs want to bring back the player.

In an interview with Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports, an anonymous NBA general manager said that the Warriors could acquire Durant at the trade deadline. However, the GM added that it might not happen, but the pursuit could resume in the summer, as the Warriors want Durant back.

"(The Warriors) got these young guys, and some people in that organization want to hang onto them," the GM said. "Some want to move off them and win now. Lie, trade them on Thursday, but that is probably not going to happen."

He added:

"The middle road is: hang on to them for this year, and if they don't pull things together, use them to go and make an offer for KD. They'd love to bring KD back to finish out his career with Steph and Klay."

Kevin Durant's future with the Brooklyn Nets is now in question because of the Kyrie Irving trade. Irving was dealt to the Dallas Mavericks in a move that shocked the NBA. That ended Irving's tumultuous tenure in Brooklyn that was filled with a lot of drama and controversies.

Durant, meanwhile, is just a few months removed from his own trade request. He still has a contract till 2026, which makes him difficult to move. However, that has not deterred interest from around the league. Several teams, including the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns, have been linked with Durant if the Nets make him available ahead of Thursday's deadline.

The Golden State Warriors have been linked with many trade rumors this season due to their inconsistent campaign. It's past the halfway point of the season, but the Warriors are not among the top teams in a very tight Western Conference.

Warriors president and general manager Bob Myers told Steiny and Guru of 95.7 The Game last week about his plans for the trade deadline. Myers said that the team will monitor the trade market as well as the buyout market.

"We gotta look and see if there's something that makes sense to answer that question," Myers said. "We gotta see: is there someone out there that fills that spot? Is there someone in a buyout? Is there someone in a trade? Is there someone who supplants that and becomes the seventh guy, the sixth guy?"
