NBA Rumors: Phoenix Suns can target free agent Carmelo Anthony
It looks like the Phoenix Suns aren't done making moves as they may be interested in pursuing free agent Carmelo Anthony to add more scoring depth. After trading for Kevin Durant at the deadline earlier this month, the Suns have an available roster spot and have been taking their time to determine which player they'll add.
One expert, New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets reporter Ian Begley, said that Phoenix could pursue the veteran All-Star:
"Based on past interest, I wouldn’t be surprised if Phoenix considered Anthony for a roster spot. At at least one point in his tenure in Brooklyn, Kevin Durant saw Anthony as a great roster addition. With Durant in Phoenix, that’s something I’d keep an eye on."
Anthony has had experience playing alongside Durant and Chris Paul on the international stage as members of Team USA. In the NBA, however, only Paul has had the experience of playing alongside Melo. In the 2018-19 season, the two played for the Houston Rockets.
Adding Carmelo Anthony could help address their issues with their bench
The Suns have had great talent coming from the bench since Paul joined the team and made them contenders. However, there hasn't been a player who was capable of taking over whenever the starters were sitting on the bench. The addition of Carmelo Anthony could change things for Phoenix.
Melo has transformed himself, becoming a reliable offensive threat when needed. He isn't the star player he once was, but is still an extremely effective player. Since finding his way into the league in 2019 as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers, Anthony has become a solid role player.
The 10-time All-Star has learned to become a versatile off-ball threat. Anthony's ability to do damage from long range has given defenses trouble. The former New York Knicks star is a beast on the boards, giving multiple chances for his squad.
If the Suns get to sign him, they'll add another scoring threat who is comfortable coming off the bench.
