NBA Rumors: Phoenix Suns and Orlando Magic potential free agent suitors for former NBA champion

Fred VanVleet is having a rather disappointing season with the Toronto Raptors. After posting career-high numbers last season, the guard has been underperforming during the 2022-23 season, which is why he may sign with another team.

According to The Athletic, there are several suitors for VanVleet's services. The Raptors may decide to enter the rebuilding mode soon, and if that happens, the guard could join the Orlando Magic or Phoenix Suns.

In case of a trade, the Raptors may decide to completely blow up their team and try several other players as well. The trade deadline is on Feb. 9, which gives Toronto a few more weeks to make roster moves.

Phoenix Suns and Orlando Magic are interested in Fred VanVleet

The 6-foot-1 guard is averaging 18.2 points per game on 37.6% shooting. While he's never been an efficient scorer, VanVleet is having the second-worst shooting percentage of his seven-year NBA career.

The positive side, however, is that the guard is only 28 and could further improve. However, it is questionable if he could improve in Toronto. VanVleet could use a change of scenery and he may get it.

While there is a possibility that the veteran point guard will be moved by the trade deadline, The Athletic reports that the Orlando Magic and Phoenix Suns are interested in VanVleet during free agency.

The guard is making $21.2 million this year with the Raptors and has another year left on his contract. However, he has a Player Option in the last year of the contract, meaning that he'll be able to opt out of it and sign a new deal.

According to rumors, Fred VanVleet is looking for a much bigger contract next summer. If he opts out of it, he will be looking to make around $30 million a year, which may be too much considering that he isn't one of the top guards in the league.

Toronto Raptors may look to rebuild

Ever since they won the championship in 2019, the Toronto Raptors haven't had much success. Unfortunately, it may be time for them to completely rebuild the roster and invest in their long-term future.

The Raptors are currently 20-24 and are tied for the final play-in spot. However, the competition in the East is very tough and they may end up missing the playoffs once again.

The Raptors have several young talented players they could keep on the roster, including Scottie Barnes and Precious Achiuwa. If they decide to blow it up, many players will be available, from VanVleet to Pascal Siakam.
