Steph Curry and Ayesha Curry object to housing project threatening their 'safety and privacy' in $30 million house in Atherton
Steph Curry and Ayesha Curry have voiced their concerns regarding a planned multifamily housing development project in their affluent Bay Area neighborhood of Atherton. The Golden State Warriors star and his wife sent a message to Bill Widmer, the Mayor of Atherton, and George Rodericks, the City Manager of Atherton, stating:
"As Atherton residents... we have been following along with the housing element updates with special interest in the 23 Oakwood property. We hesitate to add to the 'not in our backyard' (literally) rhetoric, but we wanted to send a note before today's meeting. Safety and privacy for us and our kids continues to be our top priority and one of the biggest reasons we chose Atherton as home."
The Curry's elaborated by noting how the development affects them as it will allow residents to see onto their property:
"With the density being proposed for 23 Oakwood, there are major concerns in terms of both privacy and safety with three-story townhomes looming directly behind us. We kindly ask that the town adopts the new housing element without the inclusion of 23 Oakwood. Should that not be sufficient for the state, we ask that the town commits to investing in considerably taller fencing and landscaping to block sight lines onto our family's property."
While it is understandable that the Curry's have faced backlash for their letter, it is also reasonable that they would oppose such a project. Being amongst the most famous families in Northern California, having strangers able to see onto your property can create safety and privacy concerns, as they noted in their letter.
Although most people would not violate their privacy, it is not unfathomable to think that there could be neighbors attempting to photograph their family in their private moments. The Curry's, whose home cost $30 million, likely paid that hefty price in part due to the privacy it affords them. Atherton is currently the most expensive code, with a median price of over $7 million.

When will the housing project behind Steph Curry and Ayesha Curry's house be resolved?
Steph Curry and Ayesha Curry are not the only members of the affluent Atherton community to voice their concerns. The plan is due to the state Housing and Community Development Department on Jan. 31. The Atherton City Council will vote on the final version of the plan at 2 p.m. PST on the 31st.
If the plan goes forward, it is unlikely that the town will fund taller fencing and landscaping. Instead, Steph Curry and Ayesha Curry will likely have to pay for such modifications out of their own pockets if they are, rightfully, uncomfortable with others seeing onto their property.
