Warriors confirm Stephen Curry's absence in Finals rematch against the Cavs

Stephen Curry will not play in the Finals rematch against the Cleveland Cavaliers

What's the story?

The Golden State Warriors, late on Monday night, announced that Stephen Curry's right ankle sprain was re-evaluated and although it was healing, he would still be out of action for another week.

In case you didn't know

Over the course of his career in the NBA, Curry has overcome numerous leg issues, primarily with his ankle. In fact, things got so serious in 2012 that the repeated ankle problems were threatening his basketball career.

Heart of the matter

Curry sprained his right ankle in the closing minutes of the team's road win over the New Orleans Pelicans a couple of weeks back. He had turned it awkwardly on E'Twaun Moore's foot as it landed. The following day, after an MRI in Charlotte, it was announced that there would be no structural damage and that he would be re-evaluated in two weeks.

Two weeks to the date, the Warriors released their update on the 2-time MVP:

As mentioned in the release, there is no doubt about the fact that Curry is healing given his non-basketball activities (dropping Under Armour Curry 4's all across the Bay).

However, the most important takeaway from this update is that with the one week re-evaluation period, Curry is all set to miss the Finals rematch on Christmas Day when the Cleveland Cavaliers come visiting.

What's next?

The Warriors won five straight since Curry went down and nine consecutive overall. The team will tip-off their longest homestand of the season against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night. They play another six games at home after that.

Author's Take

It's fine. Having won five straight without him, even considering the other injuries (Draymond Green and Zaza Pachulia), the Warriors have enough firepower without him. What is of utmost priority is Curry's right ankle so the team must take the most cautious approach possible, which they are.
