Warriors Trade Rumors Roundup, February 2nd: Wesley Matthews to the Dubs?
The New York Knicks turned the league upside down after engaging in a blockbuster seven-player deal with the Dallas Mavericks. Even though Kristaps Porzingis has been the center of attraction of the trade, there is one player involved in this trade who can help the Warriors' second unit in the postseason. He is shooting guard Wesley Matthews.
Matthews is currently in his 10th season in the NBA but has never gone past the second round of playoffs. The 32-year-old is averaging impressive 13.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game this year on 41.4 percent shooting, including 38.0 percent shooting from the distance.
While the Warriors are the favourites to win it all this year, looking at the way teams like Oklahoma City Thunder, Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors have been performing, it is not going to be very easy for the Warriors in the playoffs to win a seven-game series without a productive second-unit.
Currently, the Dubs don't have any wing player with playoff experience, besides Andre Iguodala. Just like Iggy, Matthews is also a very defensive minded wing player and that is a quality any team desires for.
According to Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area:
Should Matthews, 32, become available in the coming weeks – by March 1 to be available for the postseason – there would be mutual interest.
One of most repeated comments by general manager Bob Myers – “You can never have too many shooters” – is one he truly believes. He’d like to place a shooter in that final roster spot.
It is widely expected that the New York Knicks will buyout the contracts of newly acquired DeAndre Jordan and Wesley Matthews. However, several other teams are expected to throw in their hats for the 32-year-old.
This is what ESPN's Tim McMahon had to say about the same.
