What is the NBA record for most 3s in a game?

3-pointers have become a big part of basketball over the last decade. Thanks to Steph Curry and other incredible long-range shooters, many NBA teams now rely on knocking down shots from beyond the arc.

However, it wasn't Curry and his Golden State Warriors who set the record for the most 3-pointers made in an NBA game. Instead, this record belongs to the Boston Celtics, who set the record on the opening night of the 2024-25 NBA season with 29 3-pointers and the Milwaukee Bucks, who made 29 3s against the Miami Heat on Dec. 29, 2022.

The defending champions Celtics torched the New York Knicks with 17 first-half 3s alone, which made it easier for them to topple the Bucks' record. Jayson Tatum was the key architect of that 3-point barrage with 8 3-pointers on 11 attempts.

Boston Celtics are the new gold standard for 3-point shooting in NBA

The Warriors have been the most prominent teams responsible for the 3-point explosion, thanks to 'Splash Bros,' Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. Every team has looked at the Warriors' peak offense as a blueprint and it has now come to fruition.

Not every team has excelled at it as much, though. However, the Celtics are an exception to that. By becoming the first team to knock down 30 3-pointers, Boston has set the new gold standard for 3-point shooting as a team. The Celtics often have perimeter threats one through five on the floor, which makes their offense lethal.

It's what helped them majorly in their 18th title pursuit while registering the best record in the league and the best offense of all time with 122.2 points per 100 possessions.

All teams have tweaked their offense even more, encouraging 3-point shooting across the board after taking inspiration from the Celtics' success.
