Which teams does the NBA want India to watch?

The 2012-13 season was a good one for NBA fans in India. We were treated to a grand total of 99 games this regular season, either available to watch on Sony SIX or on NBA.com/India. I’m not completely sure about this next bit, but I think there were quite a few more games which were not shown live, hence were not on the list I referred to. Anyway, 21 games were shown on NBA.com/India and 78 on Sony SIX. 27 of the 30 NBA teams were shown in India, and I’m not complaining about not seeing the other 3 teams.

The top 8 teams appeared more than 10 times. The Blazers seem like a curious addition to the mix of must-watch teams. But its probably more about the team they were matched up against. The Suns probably should not be there 7 times either. Western Conference teams have appeared 131 times and Eastern Conference teams were on 57 times. It would be great to see more of the Pacers, Nets, Wolves and Rockets at the expense of teams like the Suns, Kings, and Magic. Three teams from the East (Pistons, Wizards and Bobcats) were not shown at all, and it’s just as well. The NBA wants to increase its fan base, and those three teams are going through depressing times right now. If I had to exclude three teams from the West as well, I’d pick the Suns, Kings and Hornets. In the next season, we may see more of the Kings though, given the Vivek Ranadive connection.
