When it comes to basketball shoe culture, the Jordan 1s sit in a tier of their own. Almost 40 years after their release, they still reign supreme as the start of an empire.

Back in 1985, the Jordan 1s were released as the debut shoe of Michael Jordan's line with Nike. They might not have known it at the time, but they'd go on to be the start of one of the most successful lines of shoes in sports history.

The shoe itself was created by Peter Moore. He was a designer from the 1970's to 1990's and was a creative director for Nike and Adidas during that stretch. Of all the things he made, Michael Jordan's shoe was among his most notable.

From the moment the shoe hit the shelves, it exceeded expectations. Nike sold 450,000 pairs in the first month and continues to be a high-ticket item all these years later.

How much do a pair of Jordan 1s cost now?

Because of how popular they still are, the shoe runs for a high price today. Going through Nike's website, the cost for a pair for Jordan 1s goes for around $180. There is a wide array of colorways to choose from, with the "High '85" colorway selling for $200.

In total, there are 15 original colorways for the signature. Most highlight some important moments in Jordan's career. These include "Chicago," "Royal," "Kentucky," "Panda" and "UNC."

The interesting history of the Jordan 1s

Part of what makes the shoe so iconic is because the history that comes with it. Because of league rules regarding shoes at the time, it created a load of controversey.

Since the Jordan 1 didn't fit under league guidelines, MJ was technically not allowed to wear them during his games with the Chicago Bulls. However, he decided to rebel against the NBA and wear them anyway.

This decision to wear the sneakers resulted in the league office fining him $5,000 every game had them on. Because of what a draw Jordan and the shoe was, Nike opted to help pay for the fines if he continued to wear them.

With its simple designs and connection to the greatest player ever, the Jordan 1s have stood the test of time. Above all else, it became a pillar of the most prominent signature shoe line ever. As far as masterpieces go, Peter Moore might consider the shoe to be his.
