Why did Kevin Durant call Shannon Sharpe a “drunk uncle” back in 2021? All you need to know
In 2021, Brooklyn Nets superstar forward Kevin Durant got into a heated exchange with Fox Sports analyst Shannon Sharpe on Twitter. The feud started in relation to a fake Durant quote that Sharpe referenced during an episode of his show “Skip and Shannon: Undisputed.”
“People try to discredit my rings, but honestly I feel like they’re the most valuable of our era. People argue (LeBron James) is the GOAT, but if I beat him in back-to-back finals, then what does that make me?” the fake Durant quote read.
Sharpe then took a shot at Durant for allegedly saying he was better than LA Lakers superstar forward LeBron James.
“Kevin Durant thought by winning the title, people would regard him universally as the best player in the NBA,” Sharpe said. “Better than even LeBron James. But very few people were willing to go there. And then he’s like. ... ‘If LeBron James is the GOAT. I beat the GOAT twice, and hit the shot in his building. What does that make me?’”
However, none of what Sharpe referenced was based on reality, and Durant was quick to let him know about it.
“Y’all drunk uncle out here lying again. When did I say this,” Durant tweeted in response.

Some fans argued that Durant did, in fact, say the quote on his podcast “The ETCs with Kevin Durant.”
But Durant quickly shut down those claims as well.
“Shannon went on TV responding to this quote like I actually said this,” Durant tweeted. “Gullible fans will believe it, or say ‘you was thinking this anyway’ it’s comedy at this point."
It was later pointed out that not only was the quote fake, but it was also five months old. So Sharpe quoted a fake quote that had been circulating on the internet for months, and he did so on a primetime sports talk show. All things considered, it certainly wasn’t a good look for Sharpe.
Shannon Sharpe blocks Kevin Durant on Twitter
Rather than accepting his embarrassing mistake of quoting a fake tweet, Shannon Sharpe instead acted like it never happened. This led Kevin Durant to continue to call him out for his mistake.
“Ole Shannon refuses to respond to me. Yo Shannon why are u using your platform to push fake quotes about me???” Durant tweeted.
The exchange later ended with Sharpe blocking Durant on Twitter entirely.
“But I’m sensitive,” Durant said as he tweeted a screenshot of Sharpe blocking him.
