Why do NBA players wear masks?

Have you ever watched a NBA game and questioned, "Is this a fashion statement or something else?" when a player wears a face mask. We know it makes them look super cool. But, in reality, wearing a mask for a game goes beyond looks.

To the uninitiated, back in the 80s, NBA players faced numerous facial injuries. When players encountered facial injuries, they had two choices: either remain in the stands or on the bench until the game concluded, or opt for the second alternative – wearing a mask, whether it was a perfect fit or not.

At times, it becomes challenging task to avoid numerous elbows during the game. The consequence of such impacts often results in facial injuries, such as a broken cheekbone or nose. Therefore, the mask serves as a protective measure for the affected area, preventing further hits.

Luka Doncic became the latest NBA player to don a mask on the court against the Philadelphia 76ers. He's not the first person to step on the court with a mask. Other players who embraced this protective gear during the 2023-24 season are Rui Hachimura of the LA Lakers and Bradley Beal of the Phoenix Suns.

The main reason why NBA players wear masks is to protect their faces from accidental hits and nudges that could aggravate an existing facial condition. In a league as physical as the NBA, it's very easy to get hit on the face while contesting for rebounds underneath the basket or while driving to the rim. In most cases, players have worn masks while on the court for protection against nose injuries.

The masks definitely make the player uncomfortable, but it's the only way to accelerate the recovery process while getting clearance to participate in games. It also signifies their dedication and resilience to play through injuries. Therefore, a transparent mask is almost akin to a symbol of honor.
