Nicolls took retirement from the service to become a health coach

Nicolls was a policeman in Illinois. In an interview with King Kamali, he reminisced about his life when he hadn't gotten into the health and fitness industry.

"I was a cop for five years and I loved being a cop. At the same time I got into working out and got into training," Nicolls said.
"I was very good at being a cop. I wanted to learn more about nutrition and health & fitness, those types of things because I had seen that there was an opportunity in the wellness industry through the police department," he added.

Kim Chizevsky, who dated and later married Chad Nicolls, became Ms. International in 1993 under his guidance. She was the first person Nicolls had coached for competitive bodybuilding.

When his wife's career was also taking off, it was a learning time for both of them as Nicolls stated:

"I was taking a year's leave of absence and just seeing what this whole bodybuilding thing was about."

Despite making nothing out of it at that moment, Nicolls knew that the bodybuilding and coaching career could give him better money. He went back to his Seargent and told him he was going to quit.
