Akhil Kumar makes comeback with gold medal at All India Police games

Akhil Kumar made a brilliant comeback from injuries winning the All India Police Games

Olympian boxer Akhil Kumar returned to competitive boxing , winning the light weight (60kg) gold medal at the All India Police Games by defeating Uttarakhand Police’s Rahul Thakur 21-10 in the final on Friday.

The former Commonwealth Games gold-medalist made a comeback to competitive boxing at this tournament after almost two years due to injuries made light work of his opponent to win the gold medal.

“It wasn’t easy. I know maybe it looked like it, but there is so much that needs to be factored in before you draw a conclusion such as this. Thakur fought well, and he is a bright prospect,” he said.

“I have worked extremely hard to comeback in the ring with the right frame of mind. I am just glad it went well, and now I am only looking forward to getting back to training and giving it my best every single time as i prepare for future tournaments.”

Akhil thanked his employers Haryana Police profusely, saying, “They have supported so many sportspersons. We get pretty much all that we need at all times and that, for a sportsperson, is a massive thing. I really am thankful towards Haryana Police for being benevolent and supportive at all times.”

He also thanked Dronacharya awardee coach Jaydev Bisht for being with him during tough times.

“Coach Bisht is a tremendous asset for any player and for me he has been there at some very tough times. He has believed a lot in me and that makes a huge difference. Also I want to thank coaches Amreek Singh (weightlifting) and Bhupender (badminton) for all there help.

“I also wish to thank NIS, Patiala, authorities and also the Sports Authority of India (SAI). They have taken extremely good care of me and that has made it possible for me to return, and indeed return stronger. I will be always indebted to them.”
