Mayweather's post-retirement plans, Berto's above the hype
Opinions are meant to vary, but numbers are definite. They don’t lie. Which is one of the many reasons why Floyd Mayweather is considered the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, currently, and a lineal champion in multiple weight classes. But with the sun setting on his in-ring legacy, ‘Money’ is looking to expand his horizons after he hangs up his gloves.
While the thought of walking away from his beloved craft must certainly be heartwrenching, it seems that Mayweather is looking forward to retirement, and has already begun making blueprints on how he’ll keep busy, away from the ring. Mayweather had the following to say to David P. Greisman of BoxingScene.com:
“We got The Money Team music group, and I’ve also been working with Al for a number of years on the concert promotions. I’ve been promoting concerts throughout the years,” Mayweather said, referencing Al Haymon, the boxing adviser who initially made his name in the concert industry.
“The Mayweather Music Group, we have different artists that we’re working with,” he said. “We got the Bad Medina makeup line [named after Mayweather’s massage therapist, according to FightHype.com]. Melissa Brim [the mother of one of Mayweather’s daughters], is working on four or five different clothing stores. She already has one.”
Mayweather also said that he’s keen to focus on his family as well: “Being a dad and watching my kids go through college,” Mayweather said, per Greisman’s piece. “Putting them through school is what’s very important.”
There has been speculation if history would repeat itself by Mayweather coming out of retirement for a 50th fight. If he successfully defends his three belts against Andre Berto on September 12, he will match legend Rocky Marciano’s undefeated 49-0 record. He had the following to tweet when asked if he would consider fighting the winner of the Miguel Cotto-Saul “Canelo” Alvarez match in November:
Asked if he'd rematch Cotto-Canelo winner Floyd said, 'Why would I fight 1 of them in my 50th fight?' Door seems ajar for a 50th fight.
