Cricket
1969: Birth of Sanath Jayasuriya, a Sri Lankan cricketer who left his mark on the cricket world with a series of stunning assaults on bowling attacks all around the world. Jayasuriya was an all-rounder and his international cricket career spread over two decades.
1988: Birth of Kemar Roach, a Barbadian cricketer who represents the West Indies in Test and One Day International cricket. He made his Test debut for West Indies in 2009 as part of the second-string side picked after the main players went on strike.
1980: Birth of Ryan ten Doeschate, a South African-born cricketer who plays internationally for the Netherlands due to his Dutch ancestry. He plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
1941: Birth of Peter Pollock, a retired South African cricketer. He has played a continuing role in the South Africa cricket team as a player and a selector.
Football
2010: Manchester City completed the signing of Spain international David Silva from Valencia as the club made a series of marquee signings during a busy summer period.
2012: San Jose’s Sam Cronin quickly recovered from an apparent injury after being struck by a well-placed ball from David Beckham.
1965: Birth of Gary Pallister, an English former professional footballer, sports television pundit and operations director of Conference National side Darlington.
Boxing
1966: Birth of Mike Tyson, a retired American professional boxer. Tyson is a former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world and holds the record as the youngest boxer to win the WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles at 20 years, 4 months, and 22 days old.
