Chess Olympiad 2024: Gukesh D shines to hand China defeat; Women's team bags a win against Georgia
Indian men’s and women’s teams maintained their sole positions after bagging victories against China and Georgia respectively in the ongoing Chess Olympiad. The event is being held at the SYMA Sports and Conference Centre in Budapest, Hungary on Wednesday, September 18.
Moving into the details of the open section, it was Gukesh D's victory that propelled the Indian men's team to a win in the seventh round. With Arjun Erigaisi, Praggnaandhaa R, and Harikrishna Pentala settling for draws, Gukesh D’s performance turned out to be heroic for India.
While Gukesh D defeated Wei Yi, Praggnanandhaa R, Arjun Erigaisi and Pentala Harikrishna settled for draws against Yu Yangyi, Bu Xiangzhi and Wang Yue respectively in the seventh round of the competition.
On the other hand, in the women’s section, India faced Georgia, winning the round by 3 - 1. Vaishali R and Vantika Agrawal secured victories against Lela Javakhishvili and Bela Khotenshvili respectively.
Furthermore, Harika Dronavalli and Divya Deshmukh settled for draws against Nana Dzagnidze and Nino Batsiashvili, eventually ending the seventh round in India women’s favor by 3-1.
1884 players, including 975 in the Open and 909 in the Women’s section, are playing in the exciting 45th Chess Olympiad. The eighth round of the Chess Olympiad 2024, starts at 6:30 PM IST on Thursday, September 19.
With seven rounds completed, four more rounds are scheduled in the tournament. It’s important to note that a total of 197 teams from 195 nations in the Open section registered for the event while 183 teams from 181 nations in the women's section are part of the competition.
