Chess Olympiad 2024: Indian men defeat Iceland on Day 2; women defeat Czech Republic

India continued their domination on the second day with a 100 percent win record in the open section of the Chess Olympiad 2024 at the SYMA Sports and Conference Centre in Budapest, Hungary, on Thursday, September 12.

Moving into the details, Indian men defeated Iceland 4-0 to bag two points in the first two rounds of the campaign. The second round witnessed Gukesh D, the FIDE Champion, playing his first contest of the competition and defeating Vignir Vatnar.

Arjun Erigaisi comprehensively defeated Hannes Stefansson on the second board. Later, Vidit Gujrathi stunned Hilmir Heimisson. Subsequently, Pentala Harikrishna bagged a win against Helgi Gretarsson.

On the other hand, the Indian women faced the Czech Republic. Harika Dronavalli bagged a win against Julia Movsesian while Divya Deshmukh continued her good run with a win against Natalie Kanakova.

Vantika Agrawal registered a convincing win against Tereza Rodstein while Tania Sachdev settled for a draw against Martina Korenova.

As many as 1884 participants — 975 in the Open and 909 in the Women’s section — are participating in the 45th Chess Olympiad in Hungary. 197 teams from 195 nations in the Open section have registered for the event while 183 teams from 181 nations in the women's category are part of it.

The third round of the Chess Olympiad 2024 starts at 6:30 PM IST on Friday, September 13.

The 45th Chess Olympiad's torch relay was initiated in India, the previous edition's host country. It passed through 11 countries before Judit Polgar marched with the torch on the streets of Budapest before reaching the venue.
