Chess Olympiad 2024: Indian men and women register wins in Round 4
Indian men and women performed exceptionally on the fourth day of the ongoing Chess Olympiad 2024. They produced similar results at the SYMA Sports and Conference Centre in Budapest, Hungary, on Saturday, September 14.
While the Indian men’s team, the second seed, defeated 16th-seeded Serbia, the top-seeded Indian women’s side beat the 13th-seeded France in Round 4.
After losing to Alexandra Kosteniuk of Switzerland, Indian women’s team player Harika Dronavalli bounced back to beat Cornette Daulyte. On the other hand, Vaishali R settled for a draw against Sophie Milliet.
Meanwhile, Divya Deshmukh secured her fourth consecutive victory in as many matches against Mitra Hejazipour while Tania Sachdev secured a win against Natacha Benmesbah.
Moving into the details of the open section, Arjun Erigaisi secured his fourth consecutive win against Aleksandar Indjic. Also, Gukesh D and Vidit Gujrathi bagged wins against Alexandr Predke and Ivic Velimir, respectively. Moreover, Praggnanandhaa R settled for a draw against Alexey Sarana.
Indian men's team is currently holding the pole position in the standings while the Indian women's side is second on the points table.
1884 participants, including 975 in the Open and 909 in the Women’s section, are competing at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Hungary. 197 teams from 195 nations in the Open section have registered for the event while 183 teams from 181 nations in the women's section are part of the campaign.
The fifth round of the Chess Olympiad 2024 starts at 6:30 PM IST on Sunday, September 15. With four rounds completed, seven more are left in the competition.
