FIDE World Junior Chess Championships U20 2024: Divya Deshmukh secures title win in girls' section
The FIDE World Junior Chess Championships U20 2024 concluded with Chess Olympiad 2022 bronze medallist Divya Deshmukh winning the title in the girls' section. The event took place in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
Divya, hailing from Nagpur, won the title after defeating Beloslava Krasteva from Bulgaria in the final round of the World Junior Chess Championships U20 2024 at the Gift City Club.
The 18-year-old Divya finished with 10 points out of a possible 11, winning nine games and drawing only two rounds.
Moving to the details of the open section, Kazakhstan’s Kazybek Nogerbek secured the title, registering a win in the last round against Mamikon Gharibyan of Armenia, propelling himself to 8.5 points in the final tally.
Emin Ohanyan settled for the second rank with 8.5 points. Luka Budisavljevic from Serbia finished third. Pranav Anand was the best-placed Indian at the 10th rank in the final standings.
Shifting our focus again to the girls’ section, Mariam Mkrtchyan settled for the runner-up slot after finishing half a point behind Divya. Ayan Allahverdiyeva from Azerbaijan was at the third spot in the final tally.
Shubhi Gupta, Rakshitta Ravi, Rindhiya V, Mrudul Dehankar, Sachi Hain, Tejaswini G, and Swara Lakshmi had a decent tournament, finishing inside the top 20.
