Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa makes a comeback at 57th Biel Chess Triathlon, finishes with seven points

Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa made a strong comeback at the 57th Biel Chess Triathlon when he finished with seven points to top the table in the Blitz leg. This fine show did enough to assure him of at least a top-four finish in the event and a place in the final three classical rounds, to be played tomorrow, which will decide the tournament winner.

Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa made an impact in the Blitz games. starting with a fighting victory over American GM Sam Shankland. He carried the momentum of the win into wins over strong contenders like Abhimanyu Mishra, Vincent Keymer, and Le Quang Liem. Though he drew with Armenian Haik Martirosyan and lost a couple of the last five rounds, Praggnanandhaa's tally of six wins and two draws earned him the top place in the blitz leg.

Now playing in the classical rounds are young Grandmasters GM Le Quang Liem, GM Haik Martirosyan, and GM Abhimanyu Mishra. These eliminator game will be played from July 23-25, thus determining the champion of the 57th Biel Grandmasters Festival.

While his Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa's sister, GM Vaishali, is participating in the Challenger triathlon at Biel. Though she had a tough blitz leg where she could score only 2.5 out of 10, her solid performance in the classical games ensured that she stayed within the top four of her category.

This is the program of the Biel Chess Festival, which began on July 13, and the curtains will fall on 26, 2024, taking place in the Concert Hall at the Biel Congress Center: Round-robin with classical, rapid, and blitz games. The final phase will consist of the classical rounds 6-8, determining the winner of the tournament. The closing ceremony on July 26, 10:30 am, closes the event.
