Norway Chess 2024: Magnus Carlsen secures title win; Ju Wenjun tops women’s event

Norwegian chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen secured the Norway Chess title for the sixth time after defeating Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana in Armageddon on June 7, Friday.

On the other hand, Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura was held to an impressive draw by the Indian Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa R as the latter went on to win the Armageddon.

Praggnanandaa R settled for the third position with 14.5 points while Alireza Firouzja and Fabiano Caruana secured the fourth and fifth ranks with 14.5 and 11.5 points respectively. Reigning World Champion Ding Liren had a forgettable tournament, settling for the wooden spoon with seven points.

Meanwhile, in the women’s section world champion Ju Wenjun secured the Women’s Norway Chess title and a prize money of USD 65,000 after registering a comfortable classical win against her rival Grandmaster Lei Tingjie.

That win allowed Grandmaster Anna Muzychuk to propel to the second rank in the final standings with an Armageddon win over GM Koneru Humpy.

Lei Tingjie settled for the third position with 14.5 points while the Indian teenager Vaishali R secured the fourth rank with 12.5 points. Once upon a time, Vaishali was leading the standings, but later she under-performed to slide down the standings.

Ace Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy is at the fifth rank in the final standings with 10 points while Pia Cramling carried the wooden spoon with eight points.

Norway Chess 2024 featured Open and Women's six-player events for equal prize funds of USD 160,000. It was scheduled from May 27 to June 7 in Stavanger.
