World Chess Championship 2024: Gukesh and Ding Liren agree for another draw in Game 9

The ninth game of the ongoing World Chess Championship 2024 between reigning champion Ding Liren and Indian Grandmaster Gukesh ended in a draw after 54 moves at the Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore.

The World Chess Championship final scores are currently tied at 4.5-4.5 with five more games to go. A tiebreaker will be scheduled to declare the ultimate champion if the championship concludes in a tie after all 14 games.

Shifting into the details of Game 9, Ding Liren was in some trouble in the middle part of the game. He had 30 minutes left to make 21 moves. Notably, he already lost Game 2 earlier in the competition by running out of the clock.

Interestingly, Ding struggled to keep up the clock from the initial moments of the game. Gukesh, who was playing with the white pieces, used the Catalan Opening, aiming to break the tie after five consecutive draws.

Speaking about the overall World Championship Final, Ding Liren initiated it with an early lead in Game 1. Later, the pair agreed to a draw in Game 2. Subsequently, Gukesh went on to bag an exceptional win in the third game as Liren ran out the clock.

Games 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 ended in a draw. The final now moves to the third rest day, scheduled on Friday, December 6.

It’s important to note that there will be 14 games in the World Chess Championship. The first player to secure 7.5 points will bag the World Champion title.
