World Chess Championship 2024: Gukesh and Ding Liren settle for a draw after 51 moves in Game 8

The eighth game of the ongoing World Chess Championship 2024 between the defending champion Ding Liren and Indian Grandmaster Gukesh concluded in a draw after 51 moves at the Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore. The World Chess Championship final scores are currently tied at 4-4.

Moving into the details of Game 8, the duo started off with an English Opening pattern. Right from the start, the Indian GM had an edge on the clock. After 20 moves, Ding had only 27 minutes left for his next 20 moves.

Interestingly, Gukesh decided to deny the three-fold repetition after his 40th move despite being in an inferior position. Nevertheless, after four and a half hours of play, the thrilling game ended in a draw in 51 moves.

Ding Liren secured an early lead in Game 1 in the Championship final. Later, the duo settled for a draw in Game 2. The Indian Grandmaster made an exceptional comeback in the third game as Liren ran out the clock. Games 4, 5, 6 and 7 ended in a draw.

It’s worth noting that there will be 14 games in the World Chess Championship. The first player to secure 7.5 points will bag the World Championship title. A tiebreaker will be scheduled to declare the ultimate champion if the championship concludes in a tie after all 14 games.
