World Chess Championship 2024: Gukesh fights hard, Ding Liren forces a draw in Game 7
The seventh game of the ongoing World Chess Championship 2024 between Ding Liren, the defending champion, and the Indian Grandmaster Gukesh ended in a draw after five hours and 20 minutes. The Championship scores are currently tied at 3.5-3.5.
Moving into the details of the game, Gukesh was in a strong position at one point with more time on his clock and a better arrangement of pieces on the board in the middle and final moments.
Ding Liren, playing Game 7 with white pieces, spent nearly 28 minutes on his seventh move. At one point, the reigning champion had 16 minutes to make 15 moves. The duo was back on the board on Tuesday (December 3) after their second rest day on Monday.
Talking about the overall Championship final, Ding Liren secured an early lead in Game 1. However, the duo settled for a draw in Game 2. Gukesh won the third game as Liren ran out the clock. Games 4, 5, and 6 ended in a draw.
It’s important to note that there will be 14 games in the World Chess Championship. The first player to reach 7.5 points will secure the World Champion title. If the championship concludes in a tie after all 14 games, a tiebreaker will be scheduled to declare the ultimate champion.
