World Chess Championship 2024 winner to take on Magnus Carlsen in Norway Chess 2025

World Chess Championship 2024 winner D Gukesh is all set to face former world champion Magnus Carlsen in the upcoming Norway Chess 2025 tournament. The highly anticipated event will take place in Stavanger, Norway, from May 26 to June 6, 2025, bringing together the world’s top chess talents.

Gukesh recently etched his name in history by becoming the youngest world chess champion at just 18 years, surpassing the legendary Garry Kasparov’s record. Gukesh defeated China's Ding Liren in a thrilling final and proved why he is being hailed as the next big thing in the chess world.

The Norway Chess 2025 tournament will feature an exciting clash between Gukesh and Magnus Carlsen, who is currently ranked World No. 1 in the FIDE rankings with a rating of 2831. Meanwhile, Gukesh holds the World No. 5 spot with a rating of 2783, sitting just behind fellow Indian Arjun Erigaisi (2801).

Carlsen, a five-time world champion, has distanced himself from the World Chess Championship format in recent years, citing his dissatisfaction with its current format. The Norwegian maestro has instead shifted his focus to rapid and blitz formats. However, he remains a dominant force in elite tournaments like Norway Chess, where he has clinched the title six times and will look to defend his crown in 2025.

Interestingly, Gukesh and Carlsen were both part of Norway Chess 2023. In that edition, the young Indian finished a commendable third, while Carlsen had an uncharacteristic outing, finishing sixth.

Who are the other players who have confirmed their participation in Norway Chess 2025?

Apart from D Gukesh and Magnus Carlsen, Norway Chess 2025 will see a star-studded lineup. China’s Wei Yi and Ju Wenjun, India’s Arjun Erigaisi and R Vaishali, and Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk are the other players who have also confirmed their participation in the tournament in Stavanger.

Speaking about his participation, Gukesh shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming challenge, stating (via Sportstar):

“I’m excited to face the strongest players in the world again in Norway and also the Armageddons will be fun. I’ll prepare as I usually do and try to be the best version of myself in every way.”
