5 college baseball standouts who could go undrafted in the 2024 MLB draft
After weeks of anticipation, the 2024 MLB draft is finally underway. Over the next three days, 30 teams will pick the best talents in college baseball during the 20-round event.
While the top prospects in the MLB Pipeline often see their dream of playing in the major leagues come true, some may find themselves less fortunate. Thus, let's take a look at five players who are likely to go undrafted in the 2024 MLB draft.
Five players who may go undrafted in the 2024 MLB draft
5. Ali Camarillo, Texas A&M
Camarillo put in a handy shift at the plate for the Aggies in the 2024 NCAA baseball season, helping them reach the College World Series finals for the first time in program history.
He recorded 7 home runs and 36 RBIs with an average of .288, starting in all 68 of the Aggies' games this season. He also stole 9 bases, highlighting his all-around talent at the plate.
However, he is ranked 246th among this year's MLB draft prospects. There are several hitters ahead of him on the list, which suggests MLB teams are likely to complete their hitting wishlists with other players despite his solid junior season with the Aggies.
4. Griffin Herring, LSU
Herring evolved into one of the Tigers' most reliable relievers under Jay Johnson in the 2024 season. He finished the season 6-1 while recording 67 strikeouts with an ERA of just 1.79 in 50.1 innings pitched.
Although he posted incredible numbers in his sophomore season, it might not be enough to convince teams he is ready for the big stage given the incredible arms available in the MLB draft ahead of the 157th-ranked prospect.
3. AJ Causey, Tennessee
After two seasons at Jacksonville State, Causey transferred to the Volunteers for the 2024 season. He was a great addition to the Vols' bullpen, finishing 13-3 while recording 125 strikeouts in 91.1 innings pitched.
However, his 4.43 ERA leaves a lot to be desired. Ranked 242nd among draft prospects, he might need another season in NCAA Baseball to make his case for the major leagues.
2. Janzen Keisel, Oklahoma State
Keisel finished the 2024 season 2-1 while recording 40 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.37 in 34.2 innings pitched. Ranked 248th among the top prospects for the MLB draft, Oklahoma State junior may not be selected given the immense pitching talent ahead of him.
1. Jay Woolfolk, Virginia
Woolfolk produced consistent numbers in his junior season with the Virginia Cavaliers this year. He finished 4-2 while recording 67 strikeouts with an ERA of 5.92 in 62.1 innings pitched.
Ranked 250th among the top prospects, Woolfolk may not be preferred over other pitchers ranked above him in the MLB Pipeline.
