College Baseball Week No. 15 D1 Rankings: LSU and DBU enter the listÂ
Ahead of the NCAA Tournament, D1Baseball.com dropped its weekly ranking of college baseball's top 25 teams. The rankings differ substantially from the NCAA's seeding of teams for the Tournament. The top eight NCAA seeds not only are regional hosts, but they're in line to be super regional hosts. However, many of those teams don't exactly align with D1's rankings.
At the bottom of the poll, LSU (No. 24) and Dallas Baptist (No. 25) have joined the poll. Previously ranked Oregon and Texas have fallen out of the college baseball top 25.
Here are D1 Baseball's top 10 college baseball teams and notes on their NCAA Tournament situations.
College Baseball Week 15 D1 Rankings
#10. Georgia (39-15)
The Bulldogs dropped their first game in the SEC Tournament in Hoover but still grabbed a No. 7 overall national seed. D1 wasn't quite as optimistic. Georgia will host a regional tournament also including UNC-Wilmington, Georgia Tech and Army. Georgia star Charlie Condon (.443, 35 homers) certainly didn't help the Bulldogs' post-season credentials.
#9. Florida State (42-15)
Florida State had a 3-1 week, reaching the ACC Tournament finals before losing to Duke. The NCAA committee awarded FSU the No. 8 national seed, which represents a likely difference between hosting a super regional series or having to go on the road to play someone else. In regional play, FSU will face Alabama, Stetson and UCF.
#8. Oklahoma (37-19)
Oklahoma State meanwhile reached the finals of the Big 12 Tournament before falling to Oklahoma State. While that was good enough for No. 8 from D1, it put the Sooners No. 9 in the NCAA Tournament draw. This means a likely super regional series at Florida State would be pending. OU drew ACC champ Duke, UConn and Oral Roberts in its regional bracket.
#7. Oregon State (42-14)
OSU was just 1-1 in Pac-12 action, but their body of work was strong enough for No. 7 from D1. The NCAA committee, on the other hand, put OSU at No. 15 nationally, barely good enough to host an NCAA regional. UC-Irvine, Nicholls and Tulane await in regional play and Oregon State would likely play at Kentucky in super regional action.
#6. North Carolina (42-13)
The Tar Heels went 1-1 in the ACC Tournament, but still drew the top seed of any non-SEC team in the NCAA draw. While D1 put Carolina at No. 6, the NCAA set them at No. 4. UNC's regional field includes defending champ LSU, Wofford and LIU. If Carolina advances, they could host Arizona or Dallas Baptist in super regional play.
#5. Arkansas (43-14)
Arkansas went 0-2 in the SEC Tournament. The Hogs did have consensus, with both D1 and the NCAA placing the Hogs at No. 5. The Razorbacks' regional field includes Louisiana Tech, Kansas State and Southeast Missouri State. Should Arkansas advance, they'd likely play host to Virginia or Mississippi State in super regional play.
#4. Texas A&M (44-13)
Like Arkansas, A&M went 0-2 in Hoover but retained a high spot. While D1 leaves the Aggies at No.4, the NCAA placed them as the No. 3 seed. A&M's regional field includes Louisiana, Texas and Grambling State. Should the Aggies advance, they'd likely host UC Santa Barbara or San Diego in super regional play.
#3. Clemson (41-14)
The Tigers went 1-1 in the ACC Tournament, but are third in the D1 rankings. The NCAA Tournament committee seeded Clemson No. 6 overall. The Clemson regional field includes Vanderbilt, Coastal Carolina and High Point. Should Clemson advance, the Tigers would probably host Oklahoma State, Nebraska or Florida in college baseball super regional play.
#2. Kentucky (40-14)
Kentucky had just a 1-2 week in Hoover but didn't budge much. Both D1 and the NCAA placed the Wildcats as No. 2. Kentucky's regional field includes Indiana State, Illinois and Western Michigan. If UK wins out, they'll likely host Oregon State or UC-Irvine in super regional play.
#1. Tennessee (50-11)
The Vols, fresh off an SEC Tournament title in a 4-1 week, remain the nation's top college baseball team. That same verdict was delivered by the NCAA selection committee. The Vols will play a regional field of Southern Miss, Indiana and Northern Kentucky. If UT advances, they'll likely host East Carolina or Wake Forest, which boasts former UT pitching star Chase Burns as its ace.
