How many Texas A&M Aggies players could get drafted in the 2024 MLB Draft?
The MLB Draft will see some of the best players in college baseball starting their journey in the major leagues. 30 teams will vie for their services on July 14th, with the 20-round event taking place over three days.
The Texas A&M Aggies enjoyed one of the strongest seasons in program history this year. Led by Jim Schlossnagle, they earned the No. 3 national seed in the postseason after going 19-11 in the SEC regular season.
They then embarked on an impressive unbeaten run in the postseason, sweeping the Bryan-College Station Regional and Bryan-College Station Super Regional to make the College World Series for the second time in three years. The Aggies made their first College World Series finals after three successive wins in bracket 2 but failed to win the coveted title after losing the series 2-1 to the Tennessee Volunteers.
From their talented roster, four names stand out when it comes to being picked in the MLB Draft. Here is a look at those talents.
Four Texas A&M Aggies players in contention to be picked in the 2024 MLB Draft
1. Braden Montgomery, OF
Montgomery transferred to the Aggies after two solid seasons at the Stanford Cardinals. Under the guidance of former hitting coach and new Aggies head coach Michael Earley, he enjoyed the strongest season of his baseball career this year.
Montgomery recorded 27 home runs and 85 RBI with an average of .322. While he has a sterling reputation as a hitter, he can also chip in with the odd appearance in the mound. He possesses a 96mph fastball and sliders and changeups in the low-80s, which helped him record a save on March 20th against Prairie View A&M.
Montgomery is currently ranked 8th in the top prospects for the draft set to feature among the top-five picks. Should this happen, he will become the highest-drafted Aggie in program history.
2. Ryan Prager, LHP
After missing the 2023 season due to injury, Prager returned this season and became one of the most lethal pitchers in NCAA Baseball. Often fulfilling the starting pitcher role, Prager went 9-1 this season while recording 124 strikeouts with an ERA of just 2.95 in 97.2 innings pitched.
He currently ranks 61st in the top prospects for the draft, making him likely to be picked in the second or third round.
3. Chris Cortez, RHP
Cortez has been one of the most reliable arms in the Aggies' bullpen this season. He went 10-3 while recording 102 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.78 in 64.2 innings pitched. He currently ranks 85th in the top draft prospects and has the potential to strengthen an MLB team's rotation in the future.
4. Ali Camarillo, SS
After a breakthrough sophomore year at CSUN, Camarillo transferred to the Aggies for the 2024 season. He contributed to the Aggies' success with 7 home runs and 36 RBI while recording an average of .288. While he currently features in the Top 250 draft prospects, he is likely to be picked in later rounds of the draft.
