Cody Schrier baseball transfer portal: Top 5 landing spots for the UCLA infielder ft. USC
Cody Schrier is set to enter the transfer portal after spending the previous three seasons as a member of the UCLA Bruins. Pete Nakos of On3 Sports reported the shortstop's departure on Monday, tweeting:
"UCLA infielder Cody Schrier has entered the transfer portal, @On3sports has learned. A 2022 Freshman All-American and Preseason All-American, he has a career .276 batting average with 20 home runs and 84 RBIs. Holds a .947 fielding percentage and .363 OBP."
Schrier joined the Bruins as a five-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class. He was viewed as a lock to be a top-100 pick in the 2021 MLB draft. However, he was undrafted out of high school due to his strong commitment to UCLA.
In three seasons at the collegiate level, he has posted a .276 batting average, 20 home runs, 84 RBIs, 94 runs, 157 hits, 23 stolen bases and an .806 OPS. Schrier, however, is coming off of the worst season of his college career.
While he is a potential draft prospect this summer, the possibility of him returning to college looms. Take a look at five landing spots for the shortstop below.
Top 5 landing spots for Cody Schrier
#1, USC Trojans
Cody Schrier was born and raised in the Southern California area. While he may be ready to move on from the UCLA Bruins, joining the rival USC Trojans would allow him to remain close to home. USC did not receive much production from shortstop Abbrie Covarrubias and could be looking for an upgrade.
#2, Texas Longhorns
Texas Longhorns shortstop Jalin Flores had a breakout season and is expected to remain in the 2024 MLB draft. Incoming coach Jim Schlossnagle could look to the transfer portal to find his replacement. He could target Cody Schrier, who could be a major bounce-back candidate.
#3, Florida Gators
Colby Shelton is another shortstop expected to remain in the 2024 MLB draft after back-to-back elite seasons. The Florida Gators have shown a willingness to utilize the transfer portal and could look to bring in the former UCLA Bruins shortstop as a replacement.
#4, Virginia Cavaliers
The Virginia Cavaliers appear likely to lose Griff O'Ferrall to the 2024 MLB Draft. Joining Virginia could allow Cody Schrier to play for one of the most respected coaches in college baseball in Brian O'Connor.
#5, UCLA Bruins
While Cody Schrier has entered the transfer portal, a return to the UCLA Bruins should not be ruled out. He could opt to remain with the only program that he has known during his collegiate career, while also staying close to home.
