“Death threats, endless text messages and other things” — Texas HC Jim Schlossnagle shares the aftermath of his decision to leave Texas A&M

Jim Schlossnagle led the Texas A&M Aggies to the 2024 College World Series but left the program a day after their Game 3 loss to take over the head coach job at the Texas Longhorns. The move was controversial, and Schlossnagle had seemingly become a villain overnight.

What happened to Jim Schlossnagle after leaving Texas A&M?

Jim Schlossnagle had an interview with the Fort Worth-Star Telegram, and he revealed some sordid tales of what he's been through since accepting the Texas Longhorns head coach job.

Schlossnagle spoke about death threats that he and his staff have been receiving:

"I knew this would be a controversial move, leaving Texas A&M for Texas. But I didn’t anticipate the venom that my family, our staff, and their families have received. Death threats, endless text messages and other things. I do believe that most Aggies are really good people, and I have heard many positive things from many of them, but the vocal minority certainly has been aggressive, to say the least."

Schlossnagle joined the Aggies in 2021 and led the program to the SEC West in his first season. He led the program to two College World Series appearances in his three-year tenure, including a finals appearance in his final season. Unfortunately, the Aggies lost to the Tennessee Vols in a closely fought Game 3 at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.

Did Jim Schlossnagle make the right decision to leave Texas A&M for Texas?

Jim Schlossnagle left Texas A&M for one of the most historically dominant programs in collegiate baseball. The Texas Longhorns have won six national baseball championships and have been runner-up in the College World Series six times.

While Texas last went to a CWS title game over a decade ago, they remain an enticing option for players and coaches. It's hard to imagine an ambitious head coach turning down a vacancy at Longhorns baseball.

Hence, it still needs to be too early to say whether Schlossnagle made the right or wrong decision going from the Aggies to the Longhorns. The Aggies have enjoyed more success in recent years (largely thanks to Schlossnagle and his coaching staff), while the Longhorns are in a drought. It'll be an interesting conversation at the end of the 2025 college baseball season.
