Did Florida State win vs. Virginia? Taking a look at the Seminoles' performance in the College World Series

Florida State defeated Virginia, 7-3, in a do-or-die 2024 College World Series game on Sunday at the Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Nebraska.

Jaime Ferrer blasted two home runs in the fourth and fifth innings to lead the Seminoles to victory and keep their CWS hopes alive. Shortstop Alex Lodise ended the game with an amazing double-play that sent the Cavaliers packing.

Florida State starter Carson Dorsey pitched like a college baseball ace on Sunday, striking out seven Virginia batters in seven innings. He allowed two earned runs in an efficient outing.

The Seminoles opened the scoring at the bottom of the third inning when Cavaliers starting pitcher Jay Woolfork walked ACC Player of the Year James Tibbs III, allowing Drew Faurot to cross the home plate for a 1-0 lead. Woolfork prevented further damage, forcing a fielder's choice groundout on Tibbs, with Marco Dinges batting, to end the bases-loaded threat.

Ferrer doubled the advantage with a 401-foot leadoff blast off Woolfork, who was replaced two batters later by Joe Savino. The Seminoles padded their lead in the fifth inning as Dinges singled to produce a run with two outs.

Then Ferrer blasted his second homer, a three-run shot that opened a six-run lead for Florida State. Lodise made it 7-0 for the Link Jarrett-mentored squad as he drilled a homer to left-center in the sixth inning.

Dorsey would allow the Cavaliers to trim the deficit as he surrendered two straight run-scoring singles to Henry Godbout and Casey Saucke. However, he recovered in time, striking out Henry Ford to end the inning.

Brennan Oxford replaced Dorsey at the top of the eighth inning after throwing 106 pitches. With a runner on second, Virginia reduced Florida State's lead to four with an Anthony Stephan double that scored Jacob Ference. Oxford would end the inning as he forced Bobby Whalen to fly out to right field.

Lodise sealed the win for the Seminoles, as he caught a line drive from Saucke and threw Godbout out at first base.

Florida State stays alive in CWS, meets North Carolina

The win kept Florida State in College World Series contention as it will next face North Carolina on Tuesday afternoon. The Tar Heels succumbed to the Tennessee Volunteers, 6-1, in the second game on Sunday.

The Seminoles, who are competing in their 24th College World Series, are looking to earn their first national championship. They have come close three times, finishing second in 1970, 1986 and 1999.
