Florida State players drafted on Day 1 of the 2024 MLB Draft ft. James Tibbs II

The 2024 MLB Draft is in full swing as Day 1 has concluded, with Florida State in action. While there are two more days and 18 more rounds of business to take care of, the top players have begun to hear their names called.

The Florida State Seminoles finished the 2024 season with a 49-17 record but were eliminated from the postseason in the College World Series. The Seminoles had multiple players who came off the board early.

Round 1 picks

#1 James Tibbs II

James Tibbs was the first member of the Florida State Seminoles to hear his name called as he was selected 13th overall by the San Francisco Giants. The team announced the selection, tweeting:

"With the 13th pick in the 2024 @MLBDraft , the #SFGiants have selected @JamesTibbsIII out of @FSUBaseball"

The outfielder hit .363 with 28 home runs, 95 RBIs, 75 runs scored, 91 hits and a 1.264 OPS last season. He hit .338 with 55 home runs, 170 RBIs, 173 runs scored, 208 hits, and a 1.147 OPS in his three-year collegiate career.

Peter Flaherty III of Baseball America praised the pick, tweeting:

"With the 13th overall pick, the San Francisco Giants have selected OF James Tibbs III. One of my favorite offensive profiles in the Draft. 60 game power, plus hit tool. Feel to hit is outstanding. At least a 55 arm in RF where he could stick."

#2 Cam Smith

Smith was the very next player off the board as the Chicago Cubs made him the 14th overall pick of the 2024 MLB Draft. The team announced the selection, tweeting:

"The #Cubs tonight selected INF Cam Smith of @FSUBaseball with the 14th overall pick in the 2024 #MLBDraft."

The third baseman hit .387 with 16 home runs, 57 RBIs, 82 runs scored, 104 hits and a 1.142 OPS last season. He finished his two-year collegiate career hitting .331 with 28 home runs, 93 RBIs, 121 runs scored, 158 hits and a 1.014 OPS.

Smith revealed that his grandma, who got him into baseball, was a Cubs fan:

"My grandma got me into the sport of baseball, she's a huge Cubs fan. She was here with me tonight."
