Jim Schlossnagle reportedly signs with Texas just a day after 2024 CWS finals loss
Jim Schlossnagle is reportedly set to take over as the Texas Longhorns' coach. Less than 24 hours after his Texas A&M Aggies lost 6-5 to the Tennessee Volunteers in the championship game of the College World Series, he appears to be making the 107-mile journey from College Station to Austin, adding a new chapter to his career.
According to reports Tuesday, his relationship with Longhorns athletic director Chris del Conte played a key role in his decision. This is a stunning development just hours after Schlossnagle vehemently denied the possibility of taking another job following the Aggies' defeat to the Volunteers on Monday.
"I think it's pretty selfish of you to ask me that question, to be honest with you. I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again, and that hasn't changed in my mind.
"That's unfair to talk about something like that. That would be like you asking (Braden) Montgomery if he's going to sign in the (MLB) draft. I understand you've got to ask the question, but I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job, and I poured every ounce of my soul in this job, and I've given this job every ounce I could possibly give it. Write that."
Jim Schlossnagle adds another chapter to century-old rivalry
Jim Schlossnagle's decision to take up the Texas job intensifies the heated rivalry between the Aggies and the Longhorns, which has been going on for over a century. He often got the better of the Longhorns' former coach, David Pierce, beating him in four of their past five meetings.
With the Longhorns set to leave the Big 12 and join the Southeastern Conference on July 1, their rivalry will only intensify further and Schlossnagle has a major job on his hands to bring glory back to Austin.
Schlossnagle joined the Aggies in 2022 after serving 18 seasons as the coach of the TCU Horned Frogs. He led them to the postseason twice in three seasons with the Aggies, making the College World Series on both occasions.
This season, the Aggies earned the No. 3 seed for the postseason, the highest in program history. They also made the College World Series final for the first time in history.
The Longhorns finished third in the Big 12 and were eliminated from the Bryan-College Station Regional by the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. They seem to believe Schlossnagle is the man to bring them to their glory days again after firing David Pierce two days ago.
