“Proud of you”: LSU HC Jay Johnson beams with pride as Tre' Morgan and Dylan Crews prepare for exciting game day
LSU Tigers Head Coach Jay Johnson was beaming with pride after two of his former players reached new heights in their major league careers. The two players in focus are Dylan Crews and Tre' Morgan, who excelled in the Tigers' successful 2023 NCAA Baseball season.
Less than two weeks ago, the line-ups for the All-Star Futures Game were revealed on the MLB Network. Crews, who went second overall in last year's draft, made the National League team for the event, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year.
While Morgan failed to make the American League team, he was one of four players selected for the Futures Skill Showcase. His competition featured Boston Red Sox prospect Roman Anthony, Chicago Cubs prospect Moises Ballesteros and Washington Nationals prospect Brady House.
Johnson celebrated their success with a short message that exemplified the pride he took in molding them into potential future MLB stars.
Johnson rejoiced, "Awesome! Proud of you Dylan, Proud of you Tre!"
Crews enjoyed success in the Futures Game as the NL Futures recorded an emphatic 6-1 victory over the AL Futures. While he failed to record a hit in his two at-bats, Reds prospect Cam Collier recorded a solo home run to help the NL Features come up trumps.
Meanwhile, Morgan finished sixth in the Future Skills showcase with 34 points. Red Sox prospect Roman Anthony won the three-round event with 66 points, just two more than Texas Rangers prospect Sebastian Walcott.
Dylan Crews and Tre' Morgan thrived under Jay Johnson
Crews and Morgan were key parts of Johnson's strong-hitting line-up last year. Crews starred for the Tigers in his junior season last year, recording 18 home runs and 70 RBI with an average of .426. His hitting prowess was crucial to the Tigers' NCAA Tournament win, winning the Golden Spikes Award to cap off an incredible season.
In the 2023 MLB Draft, Crews and Paul Skenes became the first pair of teammates in history to be picked as the top two overall picks. The Pittsburgh Pirates made Skenes the top overall pick, while the Washington Nationals made Crews the second overall pick.
Meanwhile, Morgan recorded 9 home runs and 53 RBI for the Tigers with an average of .316 in his junior season last year. The Rays drafted him in the third round of last year's draft.
