Texas A&M baseball coaching job: Aggies set to hire Michael Earley as Jim Schlossnagle's replacement in 2024
As per multiple reports in the media, Michael Earley is set to be hired as the new coach of Texas A&M. The decision comes less than a week after the Aggies finished as runners-up in the College World Series final.
He will replace Jim Schlossnagle who left for Texas right after his coaching stint with Texas A&M was over.
Earley, who previously served as an assistant at Arizona State, was the hitting coach under Schlossnagle during his three-year tenure. He will bring his expertise in hitting to the Aggies fold. This past season, he helped Texas A&M smack 134 home runs, a record for the school.
Texas A&M will make an announcement on the hiring in a few hours. The 36-year-old was part of the coaching staff that made the College World Series two times as he helped the team compile a record of 135-62. This past season, the Aggies finished 53-15 overall and 19-11 in the SEC.
Michael Earley is set to become the new Texas A&M baseball coach
The hiring of Michael Earley as new Texas A&M coach is the first hiring decision made by Aggies' Athletic Director Trev Alberts since taking over from the position in March.
Earley had a hand in making Texas A&M have the nation's best offense in the 2024 season. As a hitting coach, he was responsible for helping the players respond correctly in every at-bat. His tutelage paid off as the Aggies recorded 422 walks, which is No. 1 in the nation.
The home run mark was fourth overall in the nation, sixth in runs scored (575) and 23rd in runs per game (8.5). Texas A&M did this despite playing in what was arguably the best conference in college baseball.
Earley helped Jace LaViolette, Braden Montgomery, and Gavin Grahovac smack 20+ homers each in a season to become the first-ever 20-homer trio in Texas A&M history. He also mentored Ivy League transfers Hayden Schott and Jackson Appel to good hitting seasons this year. Schott and Appel hit .335 and .331, respectively.
Before joining Schlossnagle in Texas A&M, Earley was part of Arizona State's coaching staff for five years. He helped mold a young Spencer Torkelson into becoming a first-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft.
The Sun Devils led the nation in home runs with 94 homers in 2019, thanks to three Arizona State players scoring double-digit round-trippers and hitting .310 as a group.
Earley was a 29th-round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft by the Chicago Red Sox. He played for six seasons where he reached Triple-A level. He also worked as an associate scout for the New York Mets before having a coaching stint with Arizona State.
