Texas Longhorn hires Drew Bishop as director of operations after Jim Schlossnagle takes over the top job
Drew Bishop has joined the Jim Schlossnagle-led Texas Longhorns as their director of operations. The former Longhorns right-handed pitcher will continue his administrative career in familiar surroundings in the foreseeable future.
The Longhorns are building a formidable team around their new coach and have brought back one of their more famous names of the yesteryears. Let's look at Bishop's profile and what to expect from the Schlossnagle-led Longhorns in 2025.
Who is Drew Bishop?
According to the Texas athletics website, Drew Bishop, the director of baseball operations, is set to begin his 13th year on the Longhorns' staff.
Drew Bishop was a decent right-handed pitcher for the Texas Longhorns during his playing days. He earned the Longhorn Academic Spirit Award in 2006 and 2007.
Bishop later took his expertise to the front office, as he joined the Longhorns as a staff member in 2008. He has remained with the program since then.
In his capacity as the Director of Baseball Operations, Bishops is tasked with directing the team's day-to-day operations, like team travel, on-campus recruiting visits, camp oversight and more. He's also a Five-Tool Baseball Director of Scouting.
What can you expect from Jim Schlossnagle and the Texas Longhorns in 2025?
Athletic director Chris Del Conte has set his sights on building a contender in Texas led by former Texas A&M Aggies coach Jim Schlossnagle. That involves rehiring competent members of David Pierce's team and bringing in high-caliber names.
The biggest addition to the Longhorns has been Jim Schlossnagle, with the coach fresh off leading the Aggies to the College World Series finals.
The Aggies lost a close game to the Tennessee Vols, but Schlossnagle's coaching earned acclaim around the baseball world. While many Aggies fans are displeased with his departure to their rivals, it's difficult to imagine Schlossnagle passing up such an opportunity.
However, restoring the Longhorns to their glory days won't be easy. The program has not competed in the CWS finals since 2009, and the team didn't even make the tourney in 2023. Patience will be required, as the team starts a new era under Schlossnagle.
Hence, expect Schlossnagle and the Texas Longhorns to be competitive in 2025, but it might not be a College World Series or bust season for the program.
Building a contender takes time, and whether the program has the patience to let their new coach cook remains to be seen.
