"This is the best team I've coached": Texas A&M HC Jim Schlossnagle credits players for their talent ahead of 2024 CWS final
Texas A&M baseball head coach Jim Schlossnagle was beaming with pride after leading the program to their first College World Series final. The Aggies are enjoying one of the strongest seasons in their history, achieving their highest seeding for the postseason as the No. 3 seed this year.
Schlossnagle created a legacy at the TCU Horned Frogs, leading them to Omaha five times in 18 seasons. However, the 53-year-old was full of praise for the Aggies, terming them the best team he has ever coached despite spending just three seasons with them.
"Pure talent, just pure draftable talent," Schlossnagle said. "It’s the best team I’ve coached when you look at it from a draft standpoint."
Their players' individual stats justify Schlossnagle's thoughts of them. Three of their players feature in the Top 100 MLB Draft prospects this season, with outfielder Braden Montgomery leading the way at No. 8.
Montgomery and Jace LaViolette have been standouts in their hitting department, recording over 25 home runs and 75 RBI each. Among their pitchers, Ryan Prager and Evan Aschenbeck have been leading the charge. Both have ERAs under 3.00, recording 118 and 75 strikeouts respectively.
Schlossnagle also credited the coaches and support staff for their role in the team's success, saying:
"I’ve said it many times. Easily, the most synergized. Just, really have great culture among our coaches and including support staff, so talented. Energy, work ethic, loyalty, knowledge of the game.
"This is the best coaching staff, most complete coaching staff that I’ve been a part of and had some great ones at different schools."
Texas A&M Baseball can make history in Omaha
The Aggies are unbeaten not only in Omaha but the entire postseason as well. Before the College World Series, they swept the Bryan-College Station Regional and Bryan-College Station Super Regional to go 8-0 before the season-ending tournament.
Should they sweep the Tennessee Volunteers 2-0 in their maiden College World Series, they will become the first team to win the NCAA Tournament undefeated since the UCLA Bruins in 2013. In addition, they will also become the 17th team to achieve the feat in NCAA Baseball history.
While this sounds glorious for the Aggies, the top-seeded Volunteers have proven this season that they are the team to beat. The Volunteers beat the Aggies in the only game they played against each other in the SEC Tournament.
Game 1 of the College World Series final between the Volunteers and the Aggies will take place on June 22nd at 7:30 pm ET.
