The 2024 MLB Draft is in full swing as Day 1 officially concludes. While there are still two more days and 18 more rounds, the top players have already begun to come off the board.
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons finished the 2024 season with a 38-22 record, however, they were eliminated from the postseason in the Greenville Regional. Round 1 picks
#1: Chase Burns
Chase Burns was the first member of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to hear his name called as he was selected second overall by the Cincinnati Reds. The right-handed pitcher finished 2024 with a 10-1 record, posting a 2.70 ERA and 191 strikeouts in 100.0 innings pitched.
In a three-year collegiate career - where he spent the first two years with the Tennessee Volunteers - he went 23-6 with a 3.21 ERA and 408 strikeouts in 252.1 innings pitched.
#2: Nick Kurtz
Nick Kurtz did not have to wait long to come off the board as the Oakland Athletics made him the fourth overall pick of the 2024 MLB Draft. The first baseman hit .306 with 22 home runs, 57 RBIs, 65 runs scored, 53 hits, and a 1.294 OPS last season. He finished his three-year collegiate career hitting .333 with 61 home runs, 182 RBIs, 206 runs scored, 189 hits, and a 1.235 OPS.
#3: Seaver King
Seaver King was the third top-ten pick from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons as the Washington Nationals selected him tenth overall. The shortstop hit .308 with 16 home runs, 64 RBIs, 59 runs scored, 78 hits, and a .954 OPS last season.
In three seasons - the first two of which were spent the Wingate Bulldogs - he hit .362 with 31 home runs, 161 RBIs, 156 runs scored, 221 hits, 31 stolen bases and a 1.057 OPS.
