WATCH: Florida's Brody Donay opens CWS showdown against Kentucky with delectable grand slam into the stands
The Florida Gators pummeled the Kentucky Wildcats in the morning game of Wednesday's batch of fixtures in the College World Series. Broday Donay was the first to strike for the Gators in the eventual 15-4 win. The catcher hit a grand slam in the first inning, opening a gap that the Wildcats were never able to catch up with.
The suffering didn't end there for Kentucky, as Florida would score three runs more in that inning alone. Donay would end up with three hits in five at-bats and with five RBIs.
In the sixth inning, with a nine-run lead, first baseman Jac Caglianone closed out the offensive galore from the Gators with a solo homer that was his 75th career home run. With that effort, he also broke Florida's all-time home run record.
Florida's luck ran out in the morning: Gators crash out at night with a 6-0 loss to Texas A&M
The Florida Gators faced a tall order on Wednesday, as their game against Kentucky was initially scheduled to be played on Tuesday night. However, the game had to be moved to Wednesday morning due to weather alerts in the Omaha area.
That meant that the Gainsville school had to win two games on the same day if it wanted to have the opportunity to play in the College World Series final.
The task proved too much for a strained Florida roster, which lost 6-0 to fellow SEC school Texas A&M during the 7:00 p.m. game. The game started awfully for the Gators, with starter Liam Peterson having to be relieved with less than half an inning of action. Peterson gave up no hits but allowed two earned runs after walking four batters.
The Aggies took the lead in the first inning and never looked back. While Florida's pitching was disastrous to start the game, Texas A&M was splendid.
Justin Lamkin started the game for the Aggies and shot out the Gators in five innings in which he only allowed three hits and stroked out nine batters.
Now, Texas A&M will face Tennessee over a best-of-three series which starts on Saturday and will decide the national champion.
