WVU baseball appoints Justin Oney as new pitching coach

Justin Oney is the latest assistant in WVU baseball, and his hiring is internal. Oney has spent the last two seasons with the program, first as the director of player development in 2023 and the pitching coordinator in 2024.

During his time with WVU, Oney helped the program to a 2023 Big 12 Championship, consecutive NCAA Regional appearances and a Super Regional run in 2024. His coaching prowess has been rewarded with a big promotion, and he should occupy a bigger role on the team in the upcoming NCAA baseball season.

West Virginia University baseball coach Steve Sabins had this to say about Oney,

"Justin Oney is one of the best developers of pitchers in the country. His ability to relate to young people and find ways to get them better is unmatched. He has a relationship-oriented approach matched with a data-centric mindset, utilizing technology, data and a network of professionatls in the pitching industry to ensure no rock is left unturned in the development of our pitchers.
"He loves recruiting, wants to see WVU on top, and is from the state and proud to be a Mountaineer. We are lucky Coach Oney will be on our staff. His fiancée Corey loves WVU Baseball and is a big part of our team as well.”

Speaking on his promotion to the pitching coach position, Oney said:

"I want to thank Coach Mazey for bringing me back home two years ago and Coach Sabins for keeping Corie and me around in Morgantown as part of his staff.
"It’s been a blast representing the great state of West Virginia and I look forward to continuing to do so.”

Justin Oney has enjoyed a successful coaching career

Oney's first coaching stint was as the Oklahoma Wesleyan Graduate Assistant. While at Oklahoma Wesleyan, he majorly assisted with the pitching staff.

Next up for Oney was a four-year stint at Eastern Oklahoma State College before he joined WVU. He was an integral part of the staff that led Eastern Oklahoma State to a 142-39 record.

He was also instrumental in the development of players, 21 of whom made it to D1. His performances at Eastern Oklahoma State earned him a move to WVU.
