Azzi Fudd felt "nervous excitement" on return against Fairleigh Dickinson

UConn star Azzi Fudd admitted feeling the nerves against Fairleigh Dickinson after a year away.

The redshirt junior, who was inserted into the lineup at the 3:39 mark of the first period and received a loud ovation from the crowd, said that she was eager to play basketball after getting sidelined for a year due to a torn ACL.

“I just had so much nervous excitement,” Fudd said of the moment. “I was talking to Paige (Bueckers) before the game about how I just wanted to play.”

Fudd, who has two seasons of collegiate eligibility, was grateful for the moment to play with her teammates. UConn coach Geno Auriemma, who surpassed retired Stanford women's coach Tara VanDerveer for the NCAA all-time wins record, spoke about the player's excitement following her much-awaited return from injury.

“Azzi has waited a long time obviously,” Auriemma said. “Since her junior year in high school, she’s missed more basketball than she’s played. I know how hard she’s worked and what it’s meant to her to come back. It’s going to be slow going at the beginning. She changes our team, makes us better.”

In two games this season, Azzi Fudd has averaged 3.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 16 minutes. The Arlington, Virginia, native has shot 18.2% from the field, including 13% from the 3-point line as she continues to find her range from the outside.

On Wednesday, she will look to improve her statistics in the Baha Mar Championship Game against Ole Miss.
