Bronny James NBA Draft: 5 teams that wouldn't benefit from drafting LeBron James' son ft. Boston Celtics
With the 2024 draft approaching and plenty of teams jockeying for brownie points from LeBron James, the Bronny James NBA draft mystery is ongoing. Taking the younger James is seen as key to signing the older James. Plenty of teams are being discussed. But several would pretty clearly say, "Thanks but no thanks."
Here are five no-shows for the Bronny James NBA draft situation.
5 teams that wouldn't benefit from drafting Bronny James
#1 Boston Celtics
First, they're the defending champions. So obviously, they're doing fine. But moreover, Boston is committed to a young nucleus of star talent like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. LeBron wouldn't really fit what Boston is doing, and the Celtics likewise probably wouldn't care to expend meaningful minutes on Bronny James. Don't expect the Celtics to factor in the Bronny James NBA draft quandry.
#2 Milwaukee Bucks
The Bucks are likewise probably stretched to the breaking point and have invested in a pair of young stars in Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. The nightmare of trying to clear cap space for LeBron James would be genuinely difficult. Plus, Milwaukee's long-term plan wouldn't deviate for a win-now move like this. Count the Bucks out of the Bronny James NBA draft hunt.
#3 Golden State Warriors
Some speculators thought that Golden State might be interested in picking up the James duo, but those reports appear to be erroneous. Golden State certainly has its own aging stars in Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Chris Paul. Meanwhile, while there's no reason to think LeBron doesn't get along with Steve Kerr, he's a big name coach.
Part of LeBron's career path is that he has strong input into the head coach. He didn't pick Kerr, and in a power play, it's not clear that Golden State would dump its future Hall of Fame coach for an aging superstar. The more thought goes into the decision, the less likely it is that the Warriors participate in the Bronny James NBA draft derby.
#4 San Antonio Spurs
There are several reasons that the Spurs aren't a likely landing spot for the James gang. First, it's a young San Antonio team. Adding a veteran star like LeBron might sell a few tickets for next year, but the Spurs are building for the long term, not the short term.
As with Kerr, there's a potential coaching issue. Gregg Popovich has earned the right to run his team. He's a legendary coach, and LeBron might be fine with Pop. But he certainly wouldn't have superior authority over him. Don't look for the Spurs to dive into the Bronny James NBA draft discussion.
#5 Denver Nuggets
Injuries and a long season the year before drained Denver, but James would upset the balance of the Nugget gameplan. Denver has built around Nikola Jokic and a bevy of athletic complementary players.
While a long-shot gamble on Bronny James might be mildly attractive, Denver would probably go for a more finished perimeter scorer at the guard positions as a draft possibility. Don't look for the Nuggets in the Bronny James NBA draft puzzle.
