Does Lucy Olsen have her own trademark? Iowa star transfer reveals how she came up with her copyrighted statement
Last season, Lucy Olsenwas tasked with leading Villanova's offense after the Dallas Wings made Maddy Siegrist the third overall pick in the 2023 WNBA draft. She played her role to perfection, ranking third in the country in scoring with an average of 23.3 points.
This season, Olsen has taken on a bigger challenge: filling in as Caitlin Clark's replacement at Iowa. She seems to have settled well in Iowa, emerging as the focal point of the Hawkeyes' backcourt this season and leading them to a strong 10-2 start to the season.
Olsen is often cheerful when she takes to the court and fulfills her media obligations. An example of it is her trademark phrase:
"BASKETBALL IS FUN".
Per award-winning reporter Blake Hornstein, the origins of this phrase goes back to Olsen's freshman year at Villanova, when she said following the Wildcats' win over BYU in March Madness that season.
"I like to play basketball, it’s fun," Olsen said during the press conference.
Lucy Olsen revealed how her family mocked her press conference in March 2022, motivating her to keep enjoying her basketball.
"My freshman year, after our first March Madness game, we beat BYU. And then I was in the press conference and someone asked, I don't even know what they asked me, but I was just a little freshman, like, 'I love playing basketball, it's so fun.'
"Then, my family was joking, 'Oh, you're so good at interviews, great job Lucy! Basketball is fun.' And then, I don't know, throughout the years, I've always smiled, and it kind of became a thing 'cause, I do love basketball so much, and it's fun. Even though that was a silly, little comment I made, it stands for who I am."
Lucy Olsen sells merchandise with her trademark
