"Fire Jon Scheyer man": Fans seem unhappy with Duke HC over Isaiah Evans' minutes as Cooper Flagg carries Blue Devils to win vs George Mason
The Duke Blue Devils notched a lop-sided 68-47 win over George Mason earlier on Tuesday. They were paced by no other than freshman sensation Cooper Flagg who had a game-high 24 points to go along with nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block to give Duke their ninth win of the 2024-2025 season.
Even with the huge victory, many of the Blue Devil faithful were not happy with how first-year sharpshooter Isaiah Evans was utilized by coach Jon Scheyer. Evans only saw 15 minutes of playing time as opposed to Flagg's 35, where he dropped nine points, all of which came from beyond the arc.
Fans then poured their reactions on social media, calling for more opportunities to be given to Evans and sharing their disappointment in Scheyer as the main tactician of a powerhouse program.
"Duke can’t score. How 'bout put one of your best offensive players in like Isaiah Evan. Please get Jon Scheyer out of Duke, man. Nolan Smith shoulda been the coach," one fan posted.
"Fire Jon Scheyer, man…Evans deserves to be playing so much. This crazy," another shared.
"Some of y’all need to realize that we were playing a very good defensive team and covered the spread while missing a ton of wide open shots. We just need to play Isaiah Evans more," another fan explained.
Others have already let out their distrust in Scheyer's system, alluding that he should no longer be at Duke's coaching helm.
"I do not like Jon Scheyer as Duke head coach even a lil' bit," one fan wrote.
"Really poor showing from Jon Scheyer tonight, the Duke offense looks completely inept," another fan said.
"Jon Scheyer ain't it," another fan captioned.
"Jon Scheyer has turned Duke into UVA under Tony Bennett. Gross," one fan compared.
Scheyer has been Duke men's basketball head coach since 2022, filling in the huge shoes left by legendary college coach Mike "Coach K" Krzyzewski. Since then, the former Blue Devil produced an NCAA Round of 32 appearance and an Elite Eight stint.
Amid a 9-2 start, many fans are expecting Scheyer to take the next step and lead Duke back to the promised land while keeping up with the standards of one "Coach K". This is because it's been almost a decade since the Blue Devils last taste of a national title, which was led by the former tactician.
Scheyer will look to add on more wins to the delight of the fans as Duke goes up against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets next on Saturday.
Isaiah Evans can become one of the main pieces of a deep national tourney run
Evans has proven time and time again in his first stint that he is a seasoned shooter. For the season, the lengthy 6-foot-6 guard is averaging 8.7 points, with 2.4 3-balls on 50% shooting, in just around 13.0 minutes of action per game.
One of his shining moments of the year thus far is when he scored 18 points, all of which came from 3-pointers, against a gutsy Auburn Tigers team on Dec. 4. He had a blistering hot 75% 3-point percentage that propelled Duke to the 84-78 triumph.
With his ability to catch and shoot, Scheyer giving more Evans minutes may just be the ace in the hole in Duke being a national tournament appearance team or one that could potentially win it all come March.
