“He doesn’t like it at all”: Carmelo Anthony’s ex La La once jokingly discussed "protective" son Kiyan's disapproval of her dating life on a talk show
Carmelo Anthony's ex wife La La Anthony once discussed her dating life and how her son Kiyan reacted to it. While making an appearance on the "Jennifer Hudson Show" in January 2023, the BMF actress spoke with Hudson about her relationships and Kiyan was not thrilled with the idea of her dating.
The show's host asked La La whether her son approved of her going out with other people.
"He’s protective. He's protective," Lala responded. "He doesn’t like it. He doesn’t like it at all.
She also jokingly mentioned that Kiyan would rather prefer she stay single.
"I’m just like, 'You just want your mom to be alone? Like, forever?' He’s like, 'Kind of,'" La La added. "But anytime his friends want to go out and do something, he’s like, 'All right, Ma, see ya later. I’m going here.' I’m like, 'You just leave me in a heartbeat, but you don’t want me to have anybody.'"
La La Anthony and future NBA Hall of Famer Carmelo met in 2003 and became engaged a year later. The couple had Kiyan in 2007. They walked down the aisle three years later at Cipriani's in New York. La La and Melo have been separated since 2021.
La La Anthony reveals why she kept her last name even after divorce from Carmelo
It has been over three years since Lala and Carmelo Anthony ended their marriage. However, the Unforgettable star has not changed her last name and is not bothered by that at all.
At Saturday’s Fanatics Fest in New York City, she expressed her excitement about Kiyan's future NBA career, revealing that it is one of the reasons she chose to keep her last name.
"The moment of being able to buy Kiyan’s NBA jersey will be crazy," moderator Taylor Rooks said.
"That’s why I haven’t changed my last name yet," Lala said. "I’m gonna keep it around for a little while! ... "It’s different when it’s your kid. "It’s just a whole different ball game. It feels like a brand new journey that I’m going on with him."
La La's son, Kiyan, is considered one of the top junior basketball players in New York. He drew interest from 21 schools, as per 247Sports. Having narrowed it down to the final six, his father's alum Syracuse is reportedly leading the race to land the talented youngster.
