UConn rising star Stephon Castle is getting a lot of attention ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft. Castle helped the Huskies win the national championship as a freshman which boosted his stock.
According to an ESPN news report, Castle has reportedly declined draft workout invitations from teams that already have designated starting point guards. This suggests that the 19-year-old is aiming for a starting point guard position in the NBA right from the beginning of his career.
Speaking with HoopsHype regarding his scouting report, Stephon Castle mentioned:
"I'd say I’m more of a two-way kind of point guard. I really like to pass the ball, and I like to shoot off the dribble a lot. There's a lot I haven't been able to showcase the past couple of months (at UConn), but that’s what my game consists of with me being on the ball, getting my teammates involved, scoring whenever I need to, and defending at a high level."
ESPN draft analyst Jonathan Givony suggested Castle might end up getting what he wished for. The San Antonio Spurs, Washington Wizards, and Utah Jazz are the three potential destinations Givony thinks the UConn star could end up with.
Considering his projected draft rank, many believed that the Portland Trail Blazers would be his new home. However, given that the Blazers already have two starting point guards on the roster, he may have reconsidered his decision.
Stephon Castle: Career and Stats
A Covington, Georgia native, Stephon Castle kickstarted his basketball journey at Newton High School. During his junior year, he averaged 16.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. By his senior year, those numbers rose to an average of 20.1 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, along with three steals per game.
Initially considered a four-star recruit, Castle was reevaluated as a five-star recruit by the end of his senior year. In his debut college season, Castle maintained his composure averaging 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.
Moreover, for his outstanding display, the 6-foot-6 guard was named the Big East Freshman of the Year in 2024 and earned a spot on the Big East All-Freshman team.
