"I'm excited": Kim Mulkey shows gratitude to LSU fans after 'sold out' arena for season opener vs Eastern KY
In a recent TV interview, Louisiana State University women’s basketball head coach Kim Mulkey was humbled and thankful to the fans after the Pete Maravich Assembly Center was sold out for her team’s season opener against Eastern Kentucky University.
Mulkey’s LSU women will tip off their NCAA campaign versus the Kentucky-based side Monday night.
Kim Mulkey expresses her excitement for the new season
The 62-year-old Mulkey is a former basketball player herself. She would now be looking to lead the LSU Tigers to a successful season in the NCAA.
In an interview with WBRZ journalist Michael Cauble on Sunday, Kim Mulkey was asked how excited she was about the LSU women’s tip-off against Easter KY.
"I'm excited. We have certainly got a lot of excitement.
"I've just heard today that we have sold out the arena. And that's just so good for our players, our school and our program," Kim Mulkey said.
Mulkey is satisfied with LSU Women’s depth “at the guard spot” ahead in of the NCAA season opener
This season will be Kim Mulkey’s Year 4 at LSU. She helped the Tigers win the national championship in her second year at Louisiana. Mulkey seems satisfied with her side’s depth, especially at the guard positions.
"It's going to be fun. I've got a lot of depth at the guard spot, got just enough post to create a little havoc," Mulkey said.
The California-born coach is looking forward to the challenge in the upcoming season.
"We are still relevant. That's what I came here to do." she added.
Kim Mulkey hailed Flau’jae Johnson as one of the top guards in the country. Unsurprisingly, the LSU Tigers’s guard averaged 14.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game last season.
Mulkey led her team to a sixth-placed finish in the SEC last season. The Tigers ended the 2023-24 campaign with a winning record of 31–6 (13–3 SEC).
If Kim Mulkey can get the best out of her star players, the LSU Women’s team should have a solid season ahead in the NCAA. Furthermore, the Tigers’s fans have every reason to be optimistic about their chances of having a successful campaign as long as their players stay injury-free.
The LSU Tigers are undoubtedly a “relevant” team, but only time will tell whether they can clinch another championship this season. All eyes will now be on Monday night when the Tigers will face the Colonels in front of a sold-out crowd at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
