“Loves playing tricks on people”: Paige Bueckers’ mom once described her as a “huge personality”

Paige Bueckers is one of the most beloved players in college basketball. The UConn guard is often seen as the leader, taking the Huskies on the road to a championship. However, Bueckers' mother, Amy Fuller, revealed the guard's more personal side in an interview from March 2020.

Right before she was set to join the Huskies for her college career, Ballislife interviewed Paige Bueckers and her parents, Bob and Amy. While describing her personality, Fuller said:

"Big, huge personality. Super sarcastic, loves playing tricks on, jokes on people, knows how to push people's buttons when she wants to — in like a fun, funny way." (From 16:52)

Bob Bueckers and Amy Fuller divorced when Paige Bueckers was three years old, and the guard stayed with her father in Minnesota. It was her father who encouraged her into basketball and cheered Bueckers at every game.

“When she was young, any sort of ball that was around we’d be throwing it,” Bob said (6:34). “When she started playing [basketball], she was around 5, just playing it when we’d go to the park or go to the gym or something like that.”

Throughout her career at UConn, Bueckers has been praised for the way she has handled all the fame and pressure. Her father commented on this in an interview with CT Insider in 2022.

“People say things like, ‘She really handles herself well’ … She doesn’t have to handle herself,” Bob said. “That’s just her. And that’s what I like. She is confident in who she is and doing it in a positive way.
“She fights for what she feels is right, which are a lot of things true to my heart, too — people who are struggling, social injustice — but this isn’t a made-up Paige for Twitter or Instagram. This is just who she is. As a parent, as her father, that’s amazing to see.”

Paige Bueckers' final college season is off to a great start

The UConn Huskies faced Boston University in their season opener on Thursday and won 86-32. Paige Bueckers finished with 13 points, seven assists and five steals, while freshman players had their best night.

Red-shirt freshman Jana El Alfy scored 17 points and took 11 rebounds, while Sarah Strong finished with 17 points, four rebounds and six steals.

With this being her final season, Bueckers carries heavy expectations of leading the No. 2-ranked Huskies to an NCAA championship. While they do have the pieces for it, Bueckers and her team will face stiff competition from defending champions South Carolina and title contenders USC.
